Ballerinas

I always enjoy doodling ballerinas. Having had 10+ years of ballet instruction I feel like this subject is easier to visualize because I've spent my life in front of a mirror learning exactly what the body should look like and what shapes should be made when ballet technique is executed properly. You can see here that I have a lot of room for improvement when it comes to drawing realistic faces/profiles, which is something I'd love to work on.

Life Drawing - Back

I went through a phase of focusing on tone. I really like how her hair turned out too.  This is a favorite of drawings I have done.

My attempt at the Millennium Falcon

Instead of using my time productively, I decided to draw the Millennium Falcon. I drew this on Thursday of last week and it took me about half an hour. I made up most of the detail because the picture I was copying from was too small and blurred. With that being said, I would like to learn how to draw smaller things with greater detail.
Hello everyone!

I've been looking through everyone's posts. Great work from everyone!! It's great to see all your talents.

I know this post is long overdue, but I wanted to share my newly completed film:

Limitless 9-16 1 from Karen Ross on Vimeo.

Week5 Drawing YiHao Zhang

I drew this when I was really young and I still really love it!

My Animation

Based on my own experience, a film about childhood lost memories.

Useful Materials in Carmen

Here is the conclusion of areas of interests:

Subjects of drawing
  • Human body/ face
  • Fabrics/ animals

Ways of drawing
  • Water color
  • Oil painting
  • Cartoon/Caricature
  • Digital painting (Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop

If you are interested in drawing human bodies and faces, please take a look at the reading materials in Carmen. I uploaded a very helpful book - Bridgman's Complete Guide to Drawing from Life. It's a great illustration collection that will help you to get started in learning human structure and anatomy.

For this week - keep uploading your good work!

sailing in the stars

This is a paint I did about a year ago, using an airbrush with acrylic paints. I want to learn more about traditional brush painting.

Paperclips

This is a painting I did a few years ago in Acrylic. I don't know why its turned sideways, ugh what the heck!!!... For the right rotation, tilt your head to the right :)

I created this image last year in my 2D Design course. The objective was by using squares, triangles and circles as well as the greyscale to create a design that represented order. From this image I would like to learn more in-depth details of the functions of Adobe Illustrator.

Week4 drawing of YiHao Zhang

A series of Network game characters

Godzilla takes the State up North

Ceramics

These are from my ceramics 3 class (I love 3D art). It's a Mongolian man with a hat! It's definitely the most realistic ceramic piece I've made.
I'm interested in learning digital painting and animation :)

Polaroid Camera

This is a polaroid camera drawing. I do not have much experience with paint, but I really would like to learn more about creating paintings.

Pencil Portrait

A drawing of my grandpa, done in pencil, I wish to learn how to use markers as well as digital art, apologies for the odd lighting and glare

Drawing with an Eraser

I toned my paper with powdered charcoal before beginning a lot of my life-drawing works.  I found it much faster and more intuitive to start this way since you could draw in the light with an eraser and then draw in the shadows with a pencil leaving the mid-tomes as the base.  I enjoyed drawing the fabric on the cloth below the model and also leaving out some parts of the drawing.

I would like to get some more experience drawing fabrics, soft goods, robots, portraits, and caricature.  I would also like to learn more about welding, woodwork, and sculpture.

Silhouettes

This is just a quick Kara Walker inspired silhouette of some dancers. I'd love to learn more about painting and caricature drawing!

Painting with a credit card

This is a painting I did last year in oils. The actual size of the painting is 3x3 ft and I painted it with a credit card instead of a paintbrush. Something I would really like to learn more about and take a class in would be painting in general. I would really like to work in watercolor, oils and acrylics more.

Something I drew years ago

There are two paintings I did when I was young.
The first one is so-called ink wash painting. I did it at 6.
The other one has some problem with perspective and I drew it when I was 11.
And I kind of stopped drawing for couple years, just picked it up recently.

I would love to learn how to draw oil painting.

Dreamcatcher

I drew this dreamcatcher for a friend back in California, but I used a website for step by step instructions. The middle, with the strings, is all me though (the instruction's was too intricate and detailed for my skills). Anyway I'm overall happy with this work except I don't like using color (I think it cheapens it) but she wanted it that way! I would really love to learn how to draw faces!

Swan watercolor

I painted this last year from a photo my cousin took. I'd love to get better at drawing humans/faces or learn more about digital illustration and develop some skills in that area.

Book Cover Illustration

Here is a picture of a book cover I illustrated my freshman year! It was for my music teachers book about music in the classroom (Its in Portuguese because I was in Brazil at the time and the title translates to: "Hullabaloo: making music in the classroom"). She got in the newspapers about her book and everything so I got my illustration in the papers too!! :D . Since then I've illustrated a whole kids book and had an illustration of mine in chapter breaks for another book. This marks a defining point in my life when I realized/defined my personal cartoon style.

I've always wanted to do figure drawing! I have a hard time drawing from observation so even though it'd be rough, id like to learn to be better at it, and it would be a dream come true if I could paint/draw super realistic greek-god looking people.

Pixel Art

A final project I did for Digital Manipulation last semester. Inspired by Jon Haddock's work. I'd like to learn about digital drawing (and maybe painting).

Photography

I was looking through pictures I took for a photography class almost two years ago, I found this one and I came across this one that I really like, I  don't really recall taking it.

I would really enjoy learning to draw characters from cartoons, or video games, I feel it would help my overall drawing ability. Also I would like to learn to paint well. I already enjoy using different colors to create new colors.

Crow Murder

An old piece, flocks, clocks, and glocks, Photoshop

Maleficent

A graphite drawing of Angelina Jolie as Maleficent.

What I would like to learn about (artistically): Painting, watercolors, etc.

Good Work!

I saw a lot of great works! I feel all of you have great talent in drawing, creating and design. Also feel free to comment on the art if you want to say something and express your feelings.

The topic for this week:
Post one of your works on the blog ( There is no limitation, the requirements are the same as last week)

Then write down what drawing skills do you want to learn outside this class
( water color, human structure, digital painting, etc)

I'm really impressed with all of your work so far!

It's probably only fair that I share something too. Here is a piece that I did a few years back taking ideas of perspective observation and layering until they were indistinguishable in parts. Basically its what we have been doing in class lately on steroids. Keep the great work coming!

Still life-Charcoal

Coloring

Having never taken an art class before, I don't have much of a portfolio to pull from for this blog. So this picture is from yesterday at the wedding for my friends that I went to. They printed off crayola coloring versions of some of their favorite engagement pictures for the guests to color with crayons.

Birthday doodle for my Dad

I love starting a doodle and not knowing where i'll end up, it doesn't work all the time because i'll hit a wall, but when it does I never stop drawing, hope you guys like it! A lot of what's in here are names of important people, things and pets in my dads life so if you don't understand don't worry!

Life Drawing Series

This is from an expressive-type series of life drawings I did.   I had taken life drawing for a couple years and I needed a break from our usual focus on proportions.  We did a ton of measuring and siting which gets tedious.  These were a lot of fun and my teacher encouraged us to explore whatever we were interested in.  I tried not to worry about the outcome so that I could be fast and free with my strokes, which I think is why I liked both the process and the outcome so much.

Lady Gaga Montage

This is a montage of Lady Gaga in graphite which I created a few years ago.

Thursday, September 11, 2014

Well I don't know if this counts or not, but I haven't really done any "artwork" in the past two years so here is a project from my computer graphics class last year that I really enjoyed.

Babies

Graphite drawing of some cute little babies.

Mural

This is the mural that I painted outside of my high school's technology department last year. (The dark silhouette is the teacher from that classroom: he stands in that exact position every single day)

Hands

This is a piece I did last year using colored pencils.
